American joke - 伝道師にとっての神のご加護とは・・・?
A traveling preacher finds himself caught in a tremendous rainstorm. Within a few hours, the motel he's staying in is flooded. As the water rises, the preacher climbs to the roof and starts praying.

Just then, a coast guard rescue party floats by in a boat. "Let's go, mister, into the boat."

"I'll stay here," says the preacher. "The Lord will save me."

The men in the boat shrug and move on. An hour later, a second boat reaches the motel. "Sir, you better get in. The water is still rising."

"No thanks," says the preacher. "The Lord is my salvation."

Toward evening, the motel is almost completely under water, and the preacher is clinging to the satellite dish on the roof. Another boat comes by and they shout out to him through the rain...

"Hey buddy, get in the boat! This is your last chance."

"I'm all right," says the preacher, looking toward heaven. I KNOW the Lord will provide."

As the boat departs, the satellite dish is struck by lightning, and the preacher is killed. When he arrives at the Pearly Gates, he is furious.

"What happened?" he shouts. "I thought the Lord would provide!"

Within seconds, a thunderous reply is heard: "Hey! I sent three you three boats, you've got to do your part."

American joke - 刺激的な一週間のレシピ!
MONDAY: It's fun to cook for Tom. Today I made angel food cake. The recipe said beat 12 eggs separately. The neighbors were nice enough to loan me some extra bowls.

TUESDAY: Tom wanted fruit salad for supper. The recipe said serve without dressing. So I didn't dress. What a surprise when Tom brought a friend home for supper.

WEDNESDAY: A good day for rice. The recipe said wash thoroughly before steaming the rice. It seemed kind of silly but I took a bath anyway. I can't say it improved the rice any.

THURSDAY: Today Tom asked for salad again. I tried a new recipe. It said prepare ingredients, lay on a bed of lettuce one hour before serving. Tom asked me why I was rolling around in the garden.

FRIDAY: I found an easy recipe for cookies. It said put the ingredients in a bowl and beat it. There must have been something wrong with this recipe. When I got back, everything was the same as when I left.

SATURDAY: Tom did the shopping today and brought home a chicken. He asked me to dress it for Sunday (oh boy). For some reason Tom keeps counting to ten.

SUNDAY: Tom's folks came to dinner. I wanted to serve roast but all I had was hamburger. Suddenly I had a flash of genius. I put the hamburger in the oven and set the controls for roast. It still came out hamburger, much to my disappointment.

GOOD NIGHT DEAR DIARY. This has been a very exciting week. I am eager for tomorrow to come so I can try out a new recipe on Tom. If I can talk Tom into buying a bigger oven, I would like to surprise him with chocolate moose.

The Discoverers of Hawai'i - No.5
South of Easter Island an exploring canoe might find winds upon which to reach eastward. Beyond Easter Island, winds and current begin a long curve toward the northeast that would carry a canoe to Peru. Off Peru, the current wheels to the northwest under the Southeast Tradewinds. With such prevailing winds, a swift canoe might sail to Peru and return to Polynesia in less time than a raft could sail one way.

Wherever Polynesians explored and established new settlements, they carried an ancient memory of an original homeland in the west. The name, Havaiki, may refer to Savai'i in Samoa, or some place farther west. It was given to Havai'i (later Ra'iatea), and Hawai'i. After death, many believed their spirits would leap from the westernmost point of their island and fly back to the ancient homeland of their ancestors.

Of the first Hawaiians, we know only that they were Polynesians, possibly from the Marquesas Islands two thousand miles away, and we know them only through archaeology. Their names and traditions are lost, obliterated by high status chiefs who arrived perhaps a thousand years later from the leeward Tahitian islands of Ra'iatea, Bora Bora and Huahine. With these new rulers the Hawaiian traditions begin. Histories are composed by conquerors.

American joke - 効果的な検問!?
職場の同僚で日米混血のM女史(既婚管理職)は、アメリカ在住のお姉さんから時折辛口のジョークを送ってもらう。そんな中から今日も一つご紹介したい。

A police officer pulled over a driver and informed him that because he was wearing his seat belt, he had just won $5,000 in a safety competition. What are you going to do with the prize money?" the officer asked. The man responded, "I guess I'll go to driving school and get my license." At that moment, his wife, who was seated next to him, chimed in, "Officer, don't listen to him. He's a smart aleck when he's drunk." This woke up the guy in the back seat, who, when he saw the cop, blurted out, "I knew we wouldn't get far in this stolen car."
